While the U.S. faces tough political questions, safe spaces dedicated to identity and creativity are need more than ever for LGBTQ teens. The Museum of Modern Art is providing just that.
MoMa is hosting an Open Art Space for queer and ally teens “who are interested in thinking about, and creating, art in a relaxed and welcoming environment.” The program is free and open to all high school-age participants. Open Art Space is a relaxed weekly drop-in program for LGBTQ high school students who are interested in thinking about, and creating, art in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Open Art Space is a free drop-in program for LGBTQ-identifying teens and their allies who are interested in thinking about and creating art in a relaxed and welcoming environment. OAS is facilitated by two artists but is shaped largely by participants’ interests. It is true that LGBTQ teens are more accepted now than when I was in high school, however Open Art Space is a place where we aim to go way beyond acceptance. Acceptance alone is lazy, it’s passive, it’s begrudging. At OAS we aim higher. Let us celebrate, appreciate, and admire our LGBTQ teens, they are, as we have learned this past year, worthy of all those things and more.
